Velvet Marshall

is a contemporary visual artist based in Topanga, California. Her work blends memory, texture, and landscape — often drawing from years spent along the beaches of Santa Monica, Malibu, and Venice. She paints using mixed media, creating layered surfaces that feel both weathered and alive.Velvet’s process is intuitive and tactile. She works with brushes, palette knives, and found materials, letting chance marks and organic movement guide each piece. She believes that paintings are conversations — holding stories, secrets, and fragments of life that reveal themselves slowly over time. Her upcoming book, Where the Paint Speaks, explores storytelling through art — weaving together personal history, creative philosophy, and the transformative nature of painting.Velvet is the founder of Velvet Marshall Fine Art, where she produces original works, commissions, and curated merchandise, and The Brushed Canvas, a nonprofit arts initiative supporting community art classes and creative outreach.

Artist Statement

My paintings begin as whispers — fragments of memory, color, and place. I work in two primary modes: oil and tar, for depth and texture, or tea and watercolor, for transparency and quiet staining. These materials create surfaces that feel aged and alive, like weathered wood or tide-worn shoreline. The process is intuitive and unrushed; I follow texture, stain, and chance marks rather than trying to control them. Each piece is an act of listening — to the ocean, to memory, and to the parts of ourselves that only speak in quiet moments.
